Greg Hutchinson (b-1970)
After I launched my drum track library, I traveled to Atlanta, Nashville, Anaheim and Los Angeles to exhibit my projects. I had booths at NAMM and International Association of Jazz Educators. I was playing my little Gretsch kit at the time. Occasionally a musician would stop by and we would jam or chat. (Joe Zawinul/Miroslav Vitous/Ralph Humphrey/Bill Watrous) I was playing my Quadragrip technique and Greg Hutchinson stopped to check it out. He was playing with Roy Hargrove at the Catalina Jazz Bar & Grill. He invited me to come to the gig.
Arriving at the Catalina, I heard Greg play with The Roy Hargrove Group. He is a great drummer and played fantastic. During the break, standing up at the bar, Greg introduced me to Jeff “Tain” Watts, told him I was playing a different style,
(That, 4- stick thing that I do) I think Jeff was still doing the Tonight Show – Jay Leno gig, with Branford at the time. I’m not a good schmoozer, that little hang was interesting. I seem to remember several other well-known drummers in that circle.
Greg Hutchinson went on to be a member of the Ray Brown Trio. He can really play and swings like there’s no tomorrow.
