Roy Haynes (b-1925)
Roy Haynes was a featured artist when Orlando hosted PAS, Percussive Arts Society. I anticipated seeing him. I wasn’t disappointed. His group’s plane flight was delayed. He spoke and played solo. In 2023+ Roy Haynes is 98 years old. There are videos of his various 80s – 90s birthday performance celebrations.
His playing, speaking and soloing at PAS, was the event’s highlight.
My first enlightened appreciation for Roy Haynes playing and sound was the 1968 - Chick Corea record “Now He Sings Now He Sobs.” It was the sound of his cymbal. In 2023+ I’ve seen video by Chick Corea talking about ownership of that cymbal. The trio features Chick, Roy and Miroslav Vitous.
(That flat ride cymbal was also played by Airto) on the “Light As A Feather” record with Flora Purim, Stanley Clark and Joe Farrell.
I continue to search for various flat ride cymbals. I’ve owned many. They are a unique acquired taste. I like the sound of the tip without typical wash.
Roy Haynes career and discography demonstrate his constant evolution. His 80+ - year career included playing drums through swing, bebop, jazz-fusion, avant-garde and rock. He worked with early jazz masters Lester Young, Charlie Parker and Bud Powell.
