Gerry Hemingway (b-1955)
Gerry Hemingway’s discography includes: Anthony Braxton, Marilyn Crispell and Reggie Workman. Hemmingway received a Guggenheim Fellowship for his work in composition, in 2000.
He appeared with his group in Orlando, which I attended. I also supplied my Gretsch snare drum for him to use. I was surprised to observe as he de-tuned the drumset. His choice for pitch and response was very low and loose. He made it work in a very musical way.
In the 80s, I was a musician working at Walt Disney and EPCOT. I subscribed to The Village Voice. I was interested in the improvised music scene created by John Zorn, The Lounge Lizards, Cecil Taylor, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Laurie Anderson and groups playing at The Knitting Factory. I looked forward to the weekly delivery of The Village Voice to my downtown Orlando Post Office Box. It would be reading material during my band breaks at EPCOT Germany.
I saw Gerry Hemingway’s name many times---playing gigs during that period. In 2023+ John Zorn and others are the last remaining few playing in that arena. I also saw Gerry Hemmingway with Frank Gratkowski at Rollins College for a WPRK radio broadcast. I performed with Frank Gratkowski in 2002. It was completely improvised. Frank and Gerry Hemingway at Rollins was very well rehearsed and charted. Gerry Hemingway has a web site with many options. (gerryhemingway.com)
