Johnny Rabb (b-1972) Collective Soul
I saw and heard Johnny Rabb at a Mars Music Clinic. My old friend Joe Skinner was the manager for a period of time. I had been using the Johnny Rabb Drumsticks, before this event. I loved those sticks and would buy them again if they were available. (Woops –looks like he has a website) I used the Rhythmsaw Model. The stick has a quiro teeth design that allows you to play different effects on the rims, high hat, cowbell, woodblock and more. I also liked the balance of the stick. It just felt great. Years before I used Trueline Sticks, which had a similar fulcrum shape and design.
Johnny Rabb was the first drummer I saw Play what is now described as the Freehand Technique. There are Youtube videos (quite old) with Johnny Rabb talking about his book with demonstrations. I have not been able to do it. I’ve tried and failed.
He was also one of the first to play 808 Drum Machine Hip Hop Beats and Grooves. Watching an Adams Drumworld 2006 (drumfestival.be) Youtube video, he has modernized and continued to expand on his Freehand Technique. (Very Impressive) He plays fantastic on this 11/12/21 “Collective Soul’ video.
