# 124 of 130 drummers I’ve seen and heard in my lifetime - Susie Ibarra
Susie Ibarra (b-1970)
In 2000, Derek Bailey invited me to play in New York City at The Tonic. He curated The Tonic for a month. I wanted to take a few days and hear some creative music and see some art.
At The Tonic, I heard many great performances including Derek Bailey, William Parker, Thurston Moore, Joey Baron, John Butcher, Joell Leandre, Gary Smith, Tony Bevan and Alan Silva. I performed solo and with several of the previously mentioned.
I briefly met Susie Ibarra at The Tonic and mentioned I’d like to hear her play. Was she anywhere soon? She told me about an event with the Trisha Brown Dance Company (1936-2017) with Dave Douglas Quartet. I found my way to the Theatre, paid my entry fee and had a nice balcony seat. Playing bass was Greg Cohen. It was a nice experience. The music was composed and fit the choreographed dance. (susieibarra.com)
