# 129 of 130 drummers I’ve seen and heard in my lifetime - Marty Morell

Marty Morell (b-1944)
Marty Morell was a member of the Bill Evans Trio for seven years. (From 1968 to 1974 with Eddie Gomez on bass) Moving to Florida he has been on the faculty at the University of Central Florida, where he teaches drums and percussion.
I’ve seen Marty play several times with “The Jazz Professors” and his original group. (2020) He doubles on drumset and vibraphone.
Bill Evans is a favorite of mine. My first exposure to him was not the original group with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motion. I have traveled through each ensemble with different bass players and drummers. I also enjoy the no drummer record with Bill Evans and Eddie Gomez. It’s a nice brush play-along tool.
There are several Youtube Videos with the Marty – Eddie – Bill combination. One of my favorites is the Studio 104 Paris, France 1972. Marty has a beautiful flat ride cymbal he plays. I’ve written that I’m a fan of that sound. I ask him about it, he said he still has that cymbal. It’s a sweet sound.
Marty plays great brushes in the performance video. There are several educational videos with Marty teaching his brush technique. I was a student at University of Central Florida from 1978-1980. I wish Marty Morell taught there when I was a --- degree seeking music student.
