Emilio Colombo – Safari Blues – Illegal Radio
I’m very proud of my first record Illegal Radio. I could listen to it today and hear something new. It’s an eclectic collection of styles including Jazz – Non Jazz – Improvisation – Percussion Ensemble – Vocals – Fusion – Smooth Jazz.
The musicians on the record include Glenn Lee, John Rakestraw, Ron Miller, Joe Dunlop, Martin Sensiper, Ron Pedley, Dan Jordan and myself. Playing percussion is Emilio Colombo.
I was managing Discount Drum World in Orlando and teaching drum lessons. Emilio became a regular customer and we became friends. I had a rehearsal space in the Discount Music complex where we held regular jam sessions. Several of those sessions would be incorporated into compositions for my Illegal Radio LP.
Emilio brought a unique groove to our ensemble. He was born in Italy and spent many years in South America before his family came to the United States. His concept was similar to my favorite percussionist Airto. Emilio was very creative and brought an international texture to the music.
The track titled Safari Blues---from the record features Emilio, Glenn Lee and myself. Emilio’s voice introduces the tune. He performs on berimbau, voice, cuica drum and percussion.
Emilio is currently residing in California. Following the footsteps of his father…he became a successful architect. I miss the unbelievable true Italian meals cooked by his Mom. Followed by Cannoli and Espresso (Salute)
