Colin Bailey (1934-2021)
I also heard Colin Bailey at the Chad Smith - NAMM, after show event. I’d heard of him, but was unfamiliar with his discography.
Born in England, he performed and recorded with many European musicians in the 50s and early 60s. In 1963, he moved to Los Angeles to play with the Victor Feldman trio. He also became part of the Vince Guaraldi Trio.
Bailey performed on the Peanuts television specials: A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) and He’s Your Dog, Charlie Brown (1968)
I remember seeing Bailey subbing the drum chair for Ed Shaughnessy, on
(The Tonight Show Band)
Colin Bailey was known for his fast foot, bass drum pedal technique. There are Youtube videos of him demonstrating his concepts and style.
That evenings hang was an interesting experience. I can understand the glamour of being part of the LA Scene. I was there with one of my Florida Rickenbacker dealers and bassist Phil Chen.
I met and played in Miami with Phil and legendary guitarist Ernest Ranglin. (1932) Phil Chen and Ernest are both from Jamaica. Phil played on the Jeff Beck album “Blow by Blow” and parts of Wired. Phil was also part of Rod Stewart’s band during the Hot Legs period. In 2004, he joined The Doors for a reformation tour. Hanging with Phil, was an observation to the LA celebrity scene, people asking for Phil’s autograph. RIP Phil Chen (1946-2021)
