This is #50 of my list. Drummers I’ve seen and heard in my lifetime. There will be more of these, I hope to complete the 100. But, my notes in future post will “probably” be music notes from my drums and performances. I haven’t been posting anything like that, after bombing my site with self indulgent videos and tracks. I’m working on a couple fun things.
Alex Acuna (1944)
I’ve heard Peruvian-American drummer percussionist Alex Acuna several times. These include drum clinics and performances. Like one of my favorite drummers-percussionist Airto, Alex plays drumset and percussion.
The first time I saw him “live in person” was with Weather Report. His time as the drummer for this group was after drumset players Alphonse Mouzon, Eric Gravatt and Greg Errico…before Peter Erskine. Jaco was playing bass.
The band was very loud and interesting with the addition of Jaco. Every drumset player in Weather Report had a different style.
The second album with Eric Gravatt and Miroslav Vitous, I Sing The Body Electric, is one of my favorites. Former Brazil 66 percussionist, Dom Um Romao really adds to this record. I was ‘on the road” listening to this record when it came out. It was a musical period of transition.
I also saw Alex Acuna when he was playing drumset for Al Jarreau.
Alex Acuna’s recording and performance discography is quite impressive.
