I watched this finally in its entirety. This great 1962 film by John Frankenheimer with Frank Sinatra / Lawrence Harvey / Angela Lansbury. Here are a few takeaways from my view. The black and white film is great, I love black and white 60s film. There are scenes that remind me of the book 1984. The concept involves brainwashing, conspiracy, communist groups and assassination. Characters were modeled on post-Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn. This was post Korean War, pre Kennedy 1963 assassination.
The brainwashing hypnotic dream scenes are really amazing. Male-Female-Black-White-Subliminal roles are played. In 2023, the politics-follow the herd-social media-polarization of the world…seems to be represented here. Sinatra is good in the film. Maybe a bit “too hip” for an Army Officer at times, that was 1962 Hollywood.
The film score was composed by my friend David Amram. David is now 92, still performing and composing. It’s a great score with a few jazz notes. The snare drum and timpani score is great. I’d like to ask him who played those parts. In the late 50s David was associate resident conductor under Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic. David also did the Brando film - Along the Waterfront.
