Micky Waller 1941-2008 / drums
I was living and playing music in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1968, when I bought this record. A few of my other records included Hendrix, Cream, Sly, Deep Purple. I think this is Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart at their best. Ron Wood also plays interesting bass. For a guitar player, he doesn’t overplay, imo. There are a couple cameos on this record by John Paul Jones and Keith Moon, playing the tympani parts on ole man river. Nicky Hopkins is really good on this record.
I may have started my fondness for British drummers around this time. My favorites were Ginger, Keith, Mitch Mitchell. Hearing the feel and sound of Micky Waller, I recognized a fat loose slightly behind the beat groove. His playing on this record is before Led Zeppelin one was released. (1969)
Thinking about this group as a rival / which didn’t happen, to Led Zeppelin is interesting. Rod Stewart moved on to much success with The Faces. I saw that group.
Kenney Jones also had that drum sound but a different feel.
Listening to this complete Truth record was great. Enjoy
