Phil Collins (1951) – Chester Thompson (1948)
When I worked for Gretsch Drums, I had an invite to go to the sound check for Phil Collins. Phil was a long time Gretsch endorser. Chester played when Phil was up front, singing.
The gig was in Orlando, what was called the Tangerine or Citrus Bowl. It’s a big open stadium.
I enjoyed what I heard for the sound check. Phil played very well. It was a situation without an audience where he could play without constraint.
I like Phil Collins drum sound. His choice for concert toms, without bottom heads was a style in the 70s. When I was with Gretsch during the 80s, you couldn’t give them away. He created a unique recording sound, with reverb gating and tuned pitches.
Much can be said about Phil’s drumming and career. In 2023, it’s sad that his health has deteriorated.
Phil Collins early fusion drumming was very progressive. Youtube videos from those bands are worth reviewing.
As a drummer, solo artist, I can’t think of anyone more successful. Ringo and Charlie excluded. With Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney, he’s sold over 100 million records.
Before the Phil Collins gig, Chester Thompson worked with Frank Zappa and Weather Report. Back in the day, 80s and 90s, many drummers performed clinics in music stores. I heard Chester in one of those. He’s an excellent musician and drummer.
I failed to mention that Phil Collins is also a left-handed drummer.
I sure enjoyed the video! Thanks, Michael.
