This is number 3 of my break tune post. I played it with a bandleader, Tommy Cashwell. He was a very popular local night club musician. I speak about him and this period in my book, Notes of a Young Drummer 1966-1969.
It was a fun tune to play way back then.
There are 2 versions of this tune written by well known studio musician Phil Upchurch. His version and The Dovells vocal version.
The lyrics in the vocal include name drops of “hippie and hip-hop” I think that’s what I hear. This doo-wop group was from Philly. Very hip group with several hits. Bristol Stomp, Hully Gully Baby.
This track is well recorded with the hand claps, great drummer and groove.
It sounds human, recorded by real singers and musicians. In todays world, producers would be looking at the wave files from Pro Tools and lining up every hand clap in perfect metronomic beat. Dehumanizing the natural ahead behind the beat groove. The Dovells version was released in 1963.
